In 1956, a prototype of a new passenger car from Volvo was presented. It became known as the Amazon in Sweden and the 121 and 122S in export markets, the latter denoting a more sporty derivative. However, despite its substantial appearance, all Amazons were surprisingly fleet of foot - this was one of the most sporty European saloons of the 1960s.

Production began in 1957 and this car was initially regarded as a larger model than the PV444. In 1956, a prototype of a new passenger car from Volvo was presented. The car became known as the Amazon in Sweden and the 121 and 122S on the export markets. The designation 122S was used for a version with a more powerful engine. En Amazon i fint originalskick. The Volvo Amazon (known as the 122S in North America) was introduced for the 1956 model year. Originally, the Amazon was offered as the 121 variant, which was the base model, but starting in 1958, the 122S variant was introduced.

Lokakuun 1956 ja heinäkuun 1970 välillä Amazonin eri malleja valmistettiin yhteensä 667 791 kappaletta. 3. heinäkuuta 1970 valmistettu viimeinen Volvo Amazon on esillä Volvon museossa Arendalissa Göteborgissa.
